Statement by the Secretary-General on the reconvening of the Conference on Cyprus

NEW YORK, 27 June 2017 - In January, I had the privilege to convene the Conference on Cyprus, which marked a historic step in the endeavours aimed at overcoming decades of division.  Today, I am encouraged by the reconvening of the Conference in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.  I welcome the determination shown by all participants in taking this important step. The opportunity for the reunification of Cyprus is now finally before us.  I call on all concerned players to seize this opportunity, for Cyprus first and foremost, but also for the wider Eastern Mediterranean region. To this end, as Secretary-General of the United Nations, I reiterate my steadfast commitment to supporting this effort.  I urge all participants to demonstrate the will and leadership required to conclude a comprehensive settlement.
