The Greek Cypriot leader, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Tufan Erhürman, met today on 9 September 2026, hosted by the United Nations Good Offices Mission in Cyprus.
The meeting took place ahead of the leaders’ expected travel to New York, where they are due to hold separate meetings with United Nations officials on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly high-level week.
The United Nations Good Offices Mission in Cyprus supports the work of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in the peace process and facilitates the 13 Technical Committees, helping sustain dialogue, build trust and address issues of importance across the island. It is recalled that during his July 2026 visit to the island, the Secretary-General said he would convene another 5+1 meeting in a broader format “after adequate preparations on confidence building, methodology and substance, taking into account the convergences already achieved” adding that the United Nations would work with the two sides and the guarantors and engagement would continue.
