The Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Tufan Erhürman, and the Greek Cypriot leader, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, met this morning, 20 October 2026, at the United Nations Good Offices Mission in Cyprus, inside the United Nations Protected Area.
The meeting was held under the auspices of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General on Cyprus, Ms. María Ángela Holguín, and the two leaders were welcomed by the top UN official in Cyprus, Mr. Khassim Diagne, on her behalf.
The meeting formed part of the continuing engagement between the two leaders, following the visit of the Secretary-General to the island in July.
A UN statement was issued following the meeting, and it noted that the leaders continued their discussions on confidence-building measures, methodology and substance. They welcomed the upcoming visit of the Personal Envoy, expected on 29 October, and looked forward to their bilateral meetings with her and a trilateral meeting scheduled for 9 November 2026.
The leaders also agreed to proceed with initiatives related to the environment and the exchange of cultural artifacts, and to meet again next week to continue their discussions. Finally, before the Personal Envoy's visit, the two leaders planned to meet with the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage and the Technical Committee on Youth; as well as the Consultative Body for Civil Society Engagement in the peace process, via its Steering Committee.
The United Nations Good Offices Mission in Cyprus supports the work of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in the peace process and facilitates the 13 Technical Committees, helping sustain dialogue, build trust and address issues of importance across the island.
