8 May 2026, Nicosia – The Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders met in the United Nations Protected Area, their sixth meeting together.
The meeting took place in a positive atmosphere, with the leaders holding a productive discussion on substantive issues and the way forward. They also reiterated their appreciation for the United Nations Secretary-General’s sustained commitment to the Cyprus process.
During the meeting, the leaders agreed on a framework for the establishment of a consultative body for civil society engagement. They also agreed to work on the preparation of a plan for the conduct of religious services throughout the island for an initial six-month period, with the possibility of renewal.
The leaders further agreed to continue working towards a coordinated response to tackle foot-and-mouth disease, and to establish a sub-committee under the Technical Committee on Economic and Commercial Matters to discuss issues related to products already designated as PGOs/PGIs.
They also agreed to meet again in the near future.
The Secretary-General, in his last report on his mission of good offices (S/2026/9), said that he remained committed to maintaining contact and dialogue, in search of a path towards a peaceful settlement on the island. The Secretary-General has welcomed the commitment shown in the past year to sustain engagement, notwithstanding this being the longest gap in active negotiations in the history of the Cyprus peace process. The special political mission in Cyprus and the Secretary-General's own good offices continue to remain at the disposal of the parties to the Cyprus issue.
