The United Nations Good Offices Mission briefed the diplomatic community in Cyprus today on key developments across the island’s Technical Committees and broader UN engagement.
The Mission’s Head of Office, Mr. Sergiy Illarionov, together with UN Facilitators, provided an update on the work of the 13 Technical Committees. The Committees bring together Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot representatives appointed by the leaders to address practical issues affecting daily life across the island.
The briefing covered areas of work ranging from crime and environmental matters to cultural heritage and humanitarian cooperation. It also addressed the UN’s ongoing facilitation role, efforts to strengthen trust between the communities, and the importance of continued dialogue in support of the prospects for a resumed peace process.
The United Nations in Cyprus remains engaged in supporting Cypriots in identifying common ground on issues of shared concern.
The Secretary-General, in his last report on his mission of good offices (S/2026/9), said that he remained committed to maintaining contact and dialogue, in search of a path towards a peaceful settlement on the island. The Secretary-General has welcomed the commitment shown in the past year to sustain engagement, notwithstanding this being the longest gap in active negotiations in the history of the Cyprus peace process. The special political mission in Cyprus and the Secretary-General's own good offices continue to remain at the disposal of the parties to the Cyprus issue.
