Today, the co-chairs of the 13 Technical Committees met with the Secretary-General, the Personal Envoy on Cyprus and senior UN officials to share insights from their work advancing cooperation on issues that matter to people across Cyprus.
Finding practical solutions to challenges of common concern, the Technical Committees help build communication, understanding and confidence between the communities across the island. Their work demonstrates how cooperation on everyday issues can improve lives and create opportunities for greater trust and dialogue.
The Secretary-General, in his last report on his mission of good offices in Cyprus, said he was “pleased to note that the technical committees have continued to build on their heightened importance, underscoring the added value of their work and their contribution to fostering dialogue and supporting broader peacebuilding efforts between the two sides.” He called on the two leaders to continue efforts to insulate the committees from political dynamics so that they can effectively work on issues of shared concern.
Bringing together diverse perspectives, today's exchange underscored the value of inclusive diplomacy and the important contribution of people-centered cooperation to efforts for peace in Cyprus.
The UN Secretary-General’s Good Offices Mission in Cyprus is a stand-alone special political mission on the island that facilitates the Technical Committees as part of the Cyprus peace process.
