The Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Cyprus, Ms. María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, met today with the leader of the Greek Cypriot community, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, as part of her ongoing consultations on the island.

In her remarks to media made after the meeting, Ms. Holguín described the discussion as positive and expressed her appreciation for returning to the island at the start of a new year. She noted that her current focus is on encouraging progress on confidence-building measures and that she is listening carefully to the positions of the two leaders. She is also scheduled to meet the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mr. Tufan Erhürman, later today.

Ms. Holguín indicated in her remarks to the media that tomorrow’s engagement with the leaders will focus on methodology and the way forward, including issues previously placed on the table. She underlined that progress in these areas is important, noting that without movement, it would be difficult to organize the next meeting in a broader “5+1” format.

Ms. Holguín will host both leaders for a joint meeting on Wednesday, 28 January 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Chief of Mission’s Residence inside the United Nations Protected Area.

The Secretary-General, in his last report on his mission of good offices S/2026/9, said that he remained committed to maintaining contact and dialogue, in search of a path towards a peaceful settlement on the island. The Secretary-General has welcomed the commitment shown in the past year to sustain engagement, notwithstanding this being the longest gap in active negotiations in the history of the Cyprus peace process. The special political mission in Cyprus and the Secretary-General's own good offices continue to remain at the disposal of the parties to the Cyprus issue.
