UN Good Offices Mission in Cyprus Engages with Brazil and Italy

The Head of Office of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Good Offices Mission in Cyprus, Sergiy Illarionov, welcomed the Ambassador of Brazil and representatives of the Embassy of Italy for two separate briefings at the Mission’s headquarters this week. Mr. Illarionov and Mission colleagues provided an overview of the mandate of the Mission, the work of the Technical Committees, and recent political developments on the island.

During the meeting, he underlined the continued importance of contact and collaboration across the island, noting that support from international partners plays a critical role in furthering trust-building initiatives between the communities. The engagement reflects the Mission’s ongoing efforts to promote dialogue and to help create conditions for the resumption of formal negotiations toward a comprehensive settlement.

The mandate of the Secretary-General’s mission of good offices in Cyprus originates from UN Security Council resolution 186 in 1964 and has evolved over decades of dedicated diplomacy and peace efforts.  Supporting the Secretary-General, his Personal Envoy and the Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, the Mission continues to facilitate cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots through the Technical Committees and through regular consultations with the parties and relevant international actors.

The United Nations remains committed to assisting the parties in finding a mutually acceptable solution that ensures a peaceful future for the island of Cyprus.
