Statement by the United Nations Spokesperson in Cyprus
Pyla/Pile 15 April 2022 – Today, the Turkish Cypriot Special Representative, Mr. Ergün Olgun, and the Greek Cypriot Negotiator, Mr. Andreas Mavroyiannis, attended the official opening of the extension of the Joint Contact Room (JCR), under the Technical Committee on Crime and Criminal Matters, to Pyla/Pile under the auspices of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General/Deputy Special Adviser on Cyprus, Mr. Colin Stewart.
The agreement to extend the JCR presence to Pyla/Pile with the assignment of relevant personnel is based on a continuous exchange of information and views on the situation in Pyla/Pile in the Technical Committee on Crime and Criminal Matters and follows extensive discussions between Mr. Mavroyiannis, and Mr. Olgun, with the facilitation of the SRSG/DSASG Stewart. The JCR presence will cooperate with local authorities in Pile/Pyla.
The aim is to enhance sharing of information about criminal activity in Pyla/Pile that will facilitate the taking of appropriate decisions/action to effectively address issues of mutual concern.
The overall aim of the JCR is to facilitate the timely exchange of information relating to crime and criminal matters for the purpose of coordinated action on crime prevention.
