On 17 September 2025, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus Ms. María Angela Holguín visited the Turkish Cypriot cemetery of Tochni/ Dohni and the Greek Cypriot cemetery of Palekythro/Balikesir, together with the Co-Chairs of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage Messrs. Ali Tuncay and Sotos Ktoris.

She was greatly encouraged to hear directly from both co-chairs about the progress achieved on the restoration process of cemeteries, as agreed by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders during the March 2025 informal meeting in a broader format, hosted by the UN Secretary-General in Geneva.

The Personal Envoy welcomed the commitment and support of the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders to this significant humanitarian effort that will touch the hearts and souls of many families throughout the island.

During the sites visits, she expressed her deep gratitude and congratulated the Co-Chairs of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage as well as the local communities involved for their tireless efforts to translate this agreement into reality.
