The Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Tufan Erhürman, and the Greek Cypriot leader, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, met today, 17 September 2026, under United Nations auspices in the United Nations Protected Area. The leaders were welcomed by the top UN official in Cyprus, Mr. Khassim Diagne, on behalf of the Personal Envoy to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, Ms. María Ángela Holguín.
Following the meeting, the UN statement that was issued noted that the two Cypriot leaders had held a good discussion on confidence-building measures, methodology and substance.
The two leaders will brief the United Nations Secretary-General on their work and discuss the way forward during their upcoming engagements in New York.
The United Nations Good Offices Mission in Cyprus supports the work of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in the peace process and facilitates the 13 Technical Committees, helping sustain dialogue, build trust and address issues of importance across the island.
It is recalled that during his July 2026 visit to the island, the Secretary-General said he would convene another 5+1 meeting in a broader format “after adequate preparations on confidence building, methodology and substance, taking into account the convergences already achieved,” adding that the United Nations would work with the two sides and the guarantor powers and that engagement would continue.
